The agricultural market of Santo António da Serra, in Santa Cruz, remains closed, almost nine months after work began on the ageing structure. As yet, no reopening dates have been confirmed.
The complaint comes from the councilors elected by the Mais Santa Cruz Coalition, who allege that “the increasing delay is generating concern among farmers, merchants, and other users of the space.”
In a press release, the opposition councilors in the Santa Cruz City Council note that “the intervention, initially announced to last only three months, has faced successive postponements, justified by the need to readjust the project.”
“According to the Coalition Mais Santa Cruz, this situation reflects a history of poor planning where decisions were based on voting rather than people’s livelihoods.
In the same statement, the group also highlights that “the delays in the reopening of the market have a direct and significant impact on the lives of farmers in Santo da Serra, who depend on this space to sell their produce.”
Furthermore, no guidelines have been issued as to who can occupy the spaces, creating more uncertainty for farmers and a climate of distrust in the politicians who are guiding the process.
Faced with this situation, the councilors elected by the Mais Santa Cruz Coalition announced that they will present a formal request for clarification to the municipal executive at the meeting of the Chamber scheduled for this Thursday, in the parish of Santo António da Serra.
