A tourist posting on TikTok claims she paid €20 for fruit at Funchal’s Farmers’ Market. The statement has reignited a long-running debate over prices charged at some of its stalls.
The visitor said she only realised the total cost when it was time to pay and called for greater regulation of prices at the popular tourist attraction.
“It is the best-known market in Funchal and it is where tourists go, but the prices are crazy,” she said. Expressing disappointment at having paid “a lot of money” for the fruit, she warned other visitors: “Never go to the Farmers’ Market. It is a tourist trap.”
The video does not reveal how much fruit she purchased or whether prices were displayed before the sale.
It prompted numerous responses from people claiming the problem has existed for many years. Some recommended that visitors instead buy fruit at markets in Câmara de Lobos or Santo da Serra.
“The Farmers’ Market has always been a tourist trap. Madeirans don’t shop there,” one person wrote. Another, who identified themselves as a Madeira resident, said they felt “embarrassed” by the way some traders allegedly take advantage of tourists.
Others argued that customers also have a responsibility to check the price before agreeing to a purchase and can refuse to buy if they consider the amount excessive.
The incident follows a similar controversy in October 2025, when tourists reportedly paid €72 for fruit at the same market.

Some social-media users are now calling for greater intervention by the relevant authorities, arguing that repeated complaints risk damaging Madeira’s reputation as a tourist destination.
The latest video has once again placed the Mercado dos Lavradores, one of Funchal’s best-known attractions, at the centre of concerns over the prices charged at certain fruit stalls.
