Lisbon v Madeira Controversy Wrong

The mobility allowance should no longer be a subject of instability and recurring dispute, argued Guilherme Silva, who considered it incomprehensible that, after decades of autonomy, the issue remains without a stable solution.

The statements were made on the sidelines of the Atlantic Conferences, in Câmara de Lobos.

“It is an absolutely unacceptable thing that issues of this nature are still raised in relations between the State and the regions,” he said.

He stressed that mobility is an essential matter for the lives of Madeirans and cannot be subject to constant revisions or cycles of political controversy. Arguing that Portugal should follow the examples of stability existing in other outermost regions.

“We should learn from comparative law, such as the Canary Islands, and set a formula that is updated according to costs and inflation,” he said.

For Guilherme Silva, the solution is to create a predictable mechanism that avoids successive changes and gives security to citizens. He also warned of the risk of party instrumentalisation.

“We cannot let these matters enter the political-party discussion or political exploitation,” he stressed, adding that he considers that the debate on mobility requires greater institutional sense and respect for the populations. “These issues are too important for the life of communities to be used as an instrument of political combat.”

He argued that, by celebrating 50 years of autonomy, there should already be a political maturity that avoids conflicts of this nature.
