Chega’s candidate for the Funchal City Council today denounced the existence of 19 immigrants living in a 3-bedroom apartment located on Rua da Vargem, in the parish of São Martinho.
In a statement, the party considers this to be a serious attack on public health and human dignity, accusing the Funchal City Council (CMF) of passivity in inspecting migrant workers’ accommodation. Chega announced that it will file a formal complaint with the municipality’s Inspection Department and the Public Security Police (PSP), demanding “immediate action.”
“What is happening on Rua da Vargem is a shame. We cannot continue to turn a blind eye to situations that threaten public health, safety, and the very dignity of those who live there and those who live next door”, said Luís Filipe Santos, candidate for the City Council.
According to the statement, the party argues that the municipality not only has powers, but also duties to act, recalling that it is up to the CMF to verify the conditions of habitability, hygiene, and safety, and may order coercive works, interdictions, or rehoming whenever necessary.
