The JPP says the prolonged closure of the Ribeira Brava pier is having a serious impact on the local economy, affecting fishermen, maritime tourism operators, local businesses, and the image of the municipality. Municipal deputy for Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP), Cátia Gouveia, points out that the infrastructure has been closed since May 2025 and has been completely off limits since the 9th of June, due to instability in the neighbouring cliff.
According to the deputy, further unstable rock formations were identified during the stabilisation works, prolonging the situation and increasing uncertainty over when the pier will reopen. While acknowledging that safety must come first, she criticises the lack of planning and the absence of a clear timetable for resolving the problem.
Cátia Gouveia also refers to the positions taken by the various bodies involved, including the Regional Government, Ribeira Brava Municipal Council, and APRAM. She notes that all of them justify the closure on safety grounds, but none has been able to provide a firm date for reopening. She argues that this lack of clarity is causing direct financial losses to those who depend on the area for their livelihoods.
The JPP deputy is calling for greater institutional pressure, including an updated technical report, increased monitoring, and support measures for those affected. She also stresses the need for more transparent communication and a recovery strategy for the area, concluding that the continued closure of the pier without clear answers is leaving residents and business owners frustrated.
