More Flights Cancelled and Diverted

Strong wind continues to affect Madeira’s International Airport. Since midnight last night and late this afternoon, 17 flights were diverted and 15 were cancelled, states ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal.

It should be remembered that the adverse weather situation led the Captaincy of the Port of Funchal to extend the strong wind warning for the archipelago’s seafront until 06:00 on Monday. The alert, issued on the recommendation of the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA), has been in force since Saturday.

On Saturday, strong winds caused the cancellation of 20 flights, and since the 30th of June, more than 70 air connections to the island have been cancelled.

Although the airport was open this morning, worsening conditions led to constrained operation, with only four aircraft managing to land between 12:55 and 13:26.

Forecasts point to further strong winds, with the possibility of more cancellations and difficult sea conditions.

Please check with your airline before leaving for the airport.
