ANA Aeroportos de Portugal issued a statement earlier this evening saying that although the “improvement of the weather conditions has allowed the airport to function normally,” they warn that conditions could worsen throughout the night.
Furthermore, ANA has been making every effort to minimise the impact on passengers, who, due to lack of accommodation, remained in the terminal. Those passengers left behind have been supported by passenger assistance teams and received bottles of water and ‘snacks.’ ANA went on to thank all those assisting them, especially SESARAM – Health Service of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, who are providing medical assistance to those passengers in need of help.
The IPMA weather forecast points to increased wind levels this evening and during the day tomorrow, so more flights may be cancelled or diverted. Therefore, ANA asks all passengers to confirm with their tour operators and/or airlines the status of their flight before travelling to the airport, to avoid unnecessary travel and overcrowding.
