A new orchid, Bulbophyllum Xavelha de Câmara de Lobos was registered on the 16th of October with the Royal Horticultural Society, which serves as an authority for the registration of orchid hybrids.
In a press statement, it was said that:
“Creating new orchid species is time-consuming, but essential in the creation of new orchid hybrids and the consequent registrations that honour the Region. However, in a laboratory exists a unique species which took two years before it produced its first flowers. A shy stem with two bold vibrant flowers which the producer believes encapsulates the heart of Câmara de Lobos.”
The “xavelhas,” are the colourful and picturesque boats found in the bay of Câmara de Lobos. It is also a term used to refer to the people of the parish or even the county. Unfortunately, the word itself has attracted negative connotations, but with this beautiful orchid in mind, nothing can take away its sheer beauty or the vibrancy of the bay of Câmara de Lobos.
