Three construction machines (diggers) and a crane truck belonging to Socicorreia were damaged in an apparent deliberate attack at the Porto Santo golf course expansion site during the early hours of Tuesday, the 6th of October.
According to a company source, the incident occurred between 01:30 and 02:00. Windows on the three machines were smashed and their hydraulic cables cut. The crane truck was set alight, damaging its cab and part of the container it was carrying.
Socicorreia has filed a complaint against unknown individuals and says the Judicial Police will be investigating. The company believes the damage was caused deliberately.
The incident is expected to delay construction while the equipment is repaired or replaced. Socicorreia estimates that losses could reach €1 million, although the final cost has yet to be established.
The company has been working at the site since mid-September and had planned to bring in additional resources over the coming days.
The report gives no indication of who was responsible or their motive, so it is too early to link the incident to public opposition to the project.
Reading the comments section, people have queried the estimated one million euros in losses.
