Águas e Resíduos da Madeira (ARM) has urged residents and businesses to separate wooden packaging for recycling, ahead of changes to waste acceptance at the Meia Serra Solid Waste Treatment Plant.
From the 12th of October, the plant will no longer accept waste containing recyclable wooden packaging. Producers must separate these materials before sending their remaining waste for treatment.
Wooden pallets, crates and other packaging used to transport fruit, vegetables and other goods can be recycled, provided they are neither painted nor contaminated.
These items can be delivered free of charge to ARM’s recycling centres at the West Zone Transfer Station in Meia Légua, Ribeira Brava; the East Zone Transfer and Madeira Sorting Station in Porto Novo, Santa Cruz; and the Porto Santo Solid Waste Processing Centre.
ARM reminded the public that separating these materials at source and sending them for recycling is a legal obligation. The company called for cooperation from residents and businesses to improve resource use and strengthen the circular economy in Madeira.
