Strong Winds Affect Airport

Strong winds disrupted operations at Madeira International Airport throughout the day, causing delays and forcing at least one aircraft to divert.

Conditions deteriorated as the day progressed, with the Santa Catarina weather station recording a maximum gust of 78 km/h at 15:00. Earlier readings showed gusts of up to 69 km/h and average wind speeds of 39.2 km/h from the north.

Several incoming services were affected, including flights from Birmingham, Lisbon and Liverpool.

Eurowings flight EW9600 from Düsseldorf, scheduled to arrive in Madeira at 16:00, was diverted to Porto Santo Airport after several unsuccessful landing attempts.

The strength and direction of the wind were believed to have been the main causes of the disruption.
