Tourists continue to ignore safety signs at the Guindaste Viewpoint in Faial, despite repeated warnings about the dangers posed by the cliff edge.

Photographs sent to the local press show dozens of visitors walking along a narrow strip of land overlooking the sea, even though signs clearly prohibit pedestrian access to the hazardous area.

Traffic congestion is also becoming a daily problem. A long line of vehicles was seen parked along the access road, obstructing tourist coaches and leaving them unable to reach the viewpoint for several minutes.

Witnesses described Tuesday’s situation as “total madness.” Tour operators working in the area say they are exhausted by the recurring problem, blaming poorly parked rental cars for blocking the road and disrupting traffic.

The Guindaste Viewpoint is one of the most popular attractions on Madeira’s north coast, but Tuesday was reportedly one of the worst days yet for dangerous behaviour and traffic disruption.

There are also reports of visitors telling tourists to just jump over fences or gates and carry on walking. This is especially the case with the closure of the walkway between Praia Formosa and Socorridos.
