Madeira experienced above-average temperatures throughout August, with all four of the archipelago’s reference weather stations recording warmer-than-usual conditions, according to preliminary data released by the Portuguese Institute for Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).
The most significant result was recorded in Porto Santo, where the average temperature was 1.6°C above the 1991–2020 norm. It was the highest average temperature recorded there during August since 1961.
Above-average temperatures were also registered at the Funchal Observatory, Chão do Areeiro and Santana weather stations.
Two additional temperature records were set during the month. Porto Santo registered a new record for the highest minimum temperature, while Selvagem Grande recorded a new maximum temperature record.
Rainfall across the archipelago was more mixed.
The Funchal Observatory received 1.3mm less rain than the August average, while Chão do Areeiro recorded a deficit of 11.8mm.
Santana, however, received 6.1mm more rain than usual, and Porto Santo recorded a positive difference of 2.4mm. A new record for daily rainfall was also registered at the Prazeres weather station.
The figures are contained in IPMA’s preliminary climatological bulletin for August 2026. The final report is expected to be published in mid-September.
