Under the motto ‘The sea that unites us,’ about 120 children and 40 teachers from various schools in the Region attended the IV Blue School Regional Meeting, held this morning at the Jesuit College.
The opening session of this meeting was led by the Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries, who welcomed the fact that, at the moment, 74 schools are participating in the Blue School programme in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, coordinated by the Directorate-General for Fisheries.
Around 13,500 students are taking part in various initiatives with a clear goal: to promote ocean literacy, raise awareness about preserving marine environments, and highlight the value of the blue economy in a region surrounded by water, which hasn’t always been fully aware of the importance and potential of its territorial waters.
Nuno Maciel points out that “the Region has played a fundamental role since the 60s, in the preservation of marine protected areas.” This work, according to the minister, continues, “we want it to be leveraged in the future, we want new generations to take these opportunities with them, to see the sea as a space of opportunities, and we also continue, if you allow me, to claim the management of our seas and the management of our area and our continental shelf.”
