The Recommended Route 1 (PR1), which connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, reopens to the public in its entirety on Friday, the 1st of May.
Affected by a landslide during the August 2024 fires, this connection reopened last week for the MIUT and then closed again so that the work could continue. It will now reopen in full.
The route, “which the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture says is the most emblematic of Madeira, will be open in both directions, between Pico do Areeiro and the Pedra Rija viewpoint, and, from this point, it will be unidirectional (Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo).
It is now possible to reserve your space on the portal, states the President of the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, Manuel Filipe.
Walkers can leave Pico Ruivo from: Vereda da Ilha (PR1.1), Vereda do Pico Ruivo (Achada do Teixeira), and, in the future, through PR1.3, Vereda da Encumeada.
Miguel Albuquerque, President of the Regional Government, was also present today while workers were still on site, carrying essential materials on their backs.
