Two defendants have been identified as causing the August 2024 fire that destroyed more than 5,100 hectares in Madeira, including Laurissilva areas, and which lasted for 13 days.
The confirmation was given to JM by the PJ coordinator in the Region, José Matos, who stressed that these defendants are already in custody. He further confirmed that this investigation is still ongoing, and the possibility of finding other individuals is not out of the question.
At the time, JM reported that a man, a Swiss emigrant, could be linked to the launch of rockets at a private party, which could have ignited the fire.
As for the two new suspects, José Matos did not provide further details, stressing only that the investigation is still ongoing by the Judiciary Police. Even so, the PJ believes the negligence of these two men may be at the origin of the fire that devastated the Region from Serra de Água to Santana.
