A study of wastewater will take place in Madeira with a view to detecting drugs and new psychoactive substances. The Department of Criminal Investigation of Madeira will lead the study and will host the first meeting of the project with its partner entities on the 6th of June at 12:30.
“This project is based on a regional academic study, titled ‘Monitoring and Mapping of Drug Consumption, with a special focus on New Psychoactive Substances, in Wastewater in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.’ The initiative has been developed by an Inspector of the Judiciary Police, alongside the University of Madeira and the University of Beira Interior.”
Therefore, over the next 12 months, samples will be collected from the different Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, including Porto Santo. Most of the treatment plants are managed by the Madeira Water and Waste Company – in the municipalities of Ribeira Brava, Câmara de Lobos, Machico, Santana and Porto Santo -, with the rest being the responsibility of the municipal councils of Funchal, Ponta do Sol, Calheta, Porto Moniz, São Vicente and Santa Cruz.
