A Madeiran woman rescued alive after spending almost 24 hours trapped beneath the rubble of a collapsed building in Venezuela has had to have her right arm amputated.
According to Correio da Manhã, Ermínia Pinto was rescued from the debris of her apartment building in Catia La Mar, La Guaira, following the powerful earthquakes that struck the country on Wednesday.
The newspaper reports that Ms Pinto, who is the director of the Luso-Venezuelan Centre Folklore Group of La Guaira, suffered severe crush injuries when the building collapsed.
She remains in hospital recovering from her injuries.
Correio da Manhã also reports that her son, Juan Pinto, has launched an online fundraising campaign to help cover his mother’s medical expenses.
In a message published as part of the appeal, he described the experience of seeing his mother rescued after almost a day beneath the rubble as “very difficult” and said the funds would be used to help pay for medicines, consultations, medical examinations, and her ongoing treatment.
