Autopsy of Dead Monk Seal Completed Today

The autopsy of the dead Monk Seal was performed at the Museu da Baleia, Caniçal this afternoon.

The dead seal, called Maminhas, was discovered and recovered yesterday afternoon from Tabaqueiro beach, in Deserta Grande.  The seal was initially transported to Machico, and then lifted using a crane loaned from the Funchal’s Sapadores Firefighters and transferred into an Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) ‘open box’ vehicle.  The transfer of the animal was described as a ‘complex’ logistics problem as the seal weighed around 300 kilos.

It is believed that the seal died from natural causes, but an autopsy is necessary to determine the actual cause of death.
