Covid Vaccination – Don’t Hold Your Breath

So with numbers of Covid cases increasing daily, mostly due to the Christmas and New Year rule relaxations, it is now thought that the most optimistic deadline for when Madeira’s population will be vaccinated against the virus is the end of 2022. But this could be very optimistic!

At the moment, the regional authorities, believe that 206,000 of the island’s population of 267,000 will need to be vaccinated, this will require more than 400,000 individual doses of vaccine. So far, out of the 206,000 who need to be inoculated, only 3,000 people have been treated (2,2000 health professionals and 800 nursing home staff and residents) under the Regional Vaccination Plan.

So far, the island has received 9,750 doses, and a further 14,625 BioNTech / Pfizer vaccines are expected to arrive in early February.  Of course this does beg the question, who is going to get the half dose?
