To mark European Maritime Day today, the Regional Directorate for the Sea, in partnership with SANAS, Ardi / Mare Madeira and the Clube Naval do Funchal, have organised several beach cleaning initiatives in Funchal, Santa Cruz (Reis Magos) and Ribeira Brava.

The President of the Portuguese Association of Travel and Tourism Agencies (APAVT), Pedro Costa Ferreira, has worryingly stated that the Foreigners and Border Service (SEF) announcement that they intend to carry out industrial action at many national airports, including Madeira, the Azores, Faro or Lisbon, is already being queried by travel operators, especially British tour operators, who at the moment are considered to be a national lifeline.

Today the body of the monk seal found dead on a pebble beach between Jardim and Paul do Mar yesterday, was removed and transported to the Whale Museum, in Caniçal where it will undergo an autopsy.

The Monk seal who has been seen resting on the pebble beach in Paul do Mar over the last couple of weeks was found dead this morning. As yet, no further information has been released.
TUI UK has announced that they will start operating flights to Madeira from three of its UK bases - London Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham. There will also be a direct flight from Gatwick to Porto Santo on Mondays.
An anonymous tip off has triggered a number of searches on various Regional Government offices by the Judicial Police, due to a complaint made about the international ferry connection tender between Madeira and the mainland.

Last night (10/05), the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea registered a 3.0 magnitude earthquake, approximately 300 km off the northwest coast of Madeira.
A shallow earthquake registering 3.1 on the Richter Scale was recorded off the northeast coast of Porto Santo, at a depth of 5 km yesterday (7th of May), at 05:35 by the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea.
