TAP Privatisation Must Protect Madeira

PSD/Madeira MPs have pledged to be “very demanding” during TAP’s privatisation, saying they will monitor compliance with the conditions set out for the sale, particularly those concerning air links to the region.

Speaking at Madeira Airport on Monday, 26th of October, MP Paulo Neves called for regular flights between Funchal and Lisbon, Porto and Faro to be maintained, alongside year-round connections between Porto Santo and Lisbon.

He also called for routes serving Madeiran communities in Caracas, Johannesburg and London to be protected, together with fares for residents, students and athletes, and the transport of patients to mainland Portugal.

“We are talking about a public service,” he said, arguing that TAP should continue to ensure territorial continuity even after privatisation.

Paulo Neves also criticised the airline’s earlier nationalisation by the Socialist Government, referring to the €3.2 billion injected into the company. He expressed hope that part of that investment could be recovered through the sale.
