The Public Security Police (PSP) is warning of a new scam scheme associated with MB Way, which can involve citizens without them realising it.
According to the PSP, the scheme begins with an unexpected transfer to the victim’s account. Shortly after, a contact appears, usually through the WhatsApp application, asking for the return of the amount. However, the authorities warn that this request may be part of an illicit scheme. Scammers use third-party accounts to ‘clean’ money of illegal origin, by returning the amount to a different number than the one who made the transfer, the victim may be unwittingly helping to cover up the trail of the crime.
In view of these situations, the PSP advises the population to redouble their attention and to be suspicious if the contact does not correspond to the mobile number that sent the money. It also recommends that you do not respond to pressure or messages of an emotional nature. If you receive a suspicious transfer, contact your bank immediately, take screenshots of all communications and evidence, and file a complaint with the PSP.
The authorities reinforce the call for caution, stressing that this type of scam has been gaining momentum and may involve legal consequences for those who, even unintentionally, collaborate with criminals.
