The “EcoCentro” recycling container

For a few days, a new mobile rubbish container is stationed in Rua Velha da Ajuda, S. Martinho parish. The cute box has several “mouths” for residents to drop off the following types of refuse for recycling – hold on:

CDs and DVD’s, batteries, kitchen utensils (such as pots and frying pans), printer cartridges, any type of burnt out light bulbs, fluorescent lights, paint cans, small household appliances, mobiles and mobile charger cables. This way, residents can get rid of all types of refuse which do NOT belong in the paper, plastic, glass and household rubbish bins.

The container is traveling to and fro for seven days, from one parish to the other, so that all citizens can place their articles in there before the container is lifted up and placed in another spot of town.

This way, the household rubbish is kept free of items which would seriously hinder proper recycling, and residents do not have to dislocate themselves to the electro-domestic shops (which by law, have to take back such items for recycling).

In Porto Novo, near Gaula, the “Ambiente” recycling installation uses separate containers for just everything, including old sofas, bikes and clothes drying racks. All of this goes to the mainland, to be properly dismembered and recycled.

The list of parishes and dates can be found here: https://www.funchal.pt/ecojuntas-da-cmf-comeca-amanha-em-santo-antonio-ecocentro-movel-esta-disponivel-durante-sete-dias/ but you as resident have to be on the lookout for the spot where they drop the helpful can.
