73% Increase in School Violence

The Public Security Police (PSP) confirms a 73% increase in school crime.  After three years of relative peace within school premises, 45 criminal occurrences have been registered so far this year.

During a political meeting, the PS-Madeira warned of the urgent need to prevent and combat indiscipline and insecurity in the Region’s schools.

This was one of the issues addressed by the PS-M deputies to the Legislative Assembly of Madeira and the Assembly of the Republic, in a meeting with the president of the Executive Council of the Basic and Secondary School of Machico, at a time when another school year begins, and the new Regional Secretary for Education, Elsa Fernandes, takes office.

At the end of the meeting, the leader of the PS-M pointed to several problems in the school environment that the tutelage of Education has not been able to solve, warning that the increase in indiscipline and insecurity in schools is a reflection of what is happening in society.

Paulo Cafôfo cited PSP data, stating that among occurrences are instances of physical and verbal aggression, bullying, and cyberbullying.

While meeting with the director of the Machico Basic and Secondary School, the issue of banning mobile phones was addressed, as well as the impact of the use of digital textbooks.  Reports show that countries such as Sweden, which were pioneers in the use of digital textbooks, are returning to traditional textbooks and writing.
