The non-governmental organisation (NGO) Social Democratic Association for the Environment, Earth and Ocean went public on Monday, accusing the JPP of siding with the PSD over the Curral das Freitas cable car project.
The NGO accuses the JPP of populism and political alignment with a regime, which does not actually protect the valuable landscape, panoramic and cultural resources of Madeira, and in particular the parish of Curral das Freiras.”
They further add that the project will forever remove the emblematic landscape of a parish that has the potential to carry out other projects with a higher rate of sustainability, responsibility, competitiveness, and resilience.Â
The NGO Press release is as follows:
“In an article today, the JPP political party exposes its position on the project to install a cable car in Curral das Freiras. By choosing to present a post-project proposal and repeating over and over again “We are not against investments,” it demonstrates that it is a party without essence, without ideology, without values, without authenticity, and without serious and solid organic environmental policies.
The JPP party, by repeating “We are not against investments ad infinitum to the PSD government party demonstrates its political alignment with the regime that does not actually protect the valuable landscape, panoramic, and cultural resources of Madeira, and in particular the parish of Curral das Freiras.
There is no real project for Curral das Freiras or for Madeira.
Madeira needs people (politicians) who can identify and project the true Madeira of tomorrow.
The primary populism that this party exhibits, convinces the resentful or envious that the regime is producing, but as a programme or alternative government project for Madeira, it has no answer or strategy, much less a programme.Â
The reality is that the JPP still has no project for the future, it does not know if we should turn Madeira into an amusement park, it does not know if it is in favour of mass tourism, it does not know how to solve the traffic problems in our mountains, it does not know how we should solve the traffic problems on Madeira’s roads, it does not know how we can solve housing problems, it does not know how to stop the concreting of Madeira and it does not have a plan to preserve Madeira’s natural heritage.
We need competent “political” people who know what they want, who have a real project in all strategic areas for the region. Saying “We are not against investments,” is no longer enough when this party force is mathematically configured as the first opposition force; this is not enough, on the contrary, it is very little. Madeirans deserve more…
That is why the JPP must review the way it works and how it communicates… communicating without wanting to create disagreement is to propose the same dynamic as PSD Madeira.
We want to reaffirm that the Civic Movement Against the Curral Das Freiras Cable Car and the Social Democratic Association Earth and Oceans are against the realisation of this project. It is a project that will forever change the emblematic landscape of Curral das Freiras, and that will have an impact on the landscape, fauna, and flora in the Madeira Natural Park and in the special area of conservation of the central mountain massif.Â
