The Portuguese Competition Authority (AdC) has approved the purchase of Tirgal – Transitários de Portugal by GS Marítima, of the Sousa Group, according to an announcement published on the regulator’s website.
“On the 20th of August 2025, the Board of Directors of the Competition Authority decided to adopt a decision not to oppose the merger, since it is not likely to create significant impediments to effective competition in the national market or in a substantial part of it,” says the AdC.
The prior notification of this merger operation – which consists of the acquisition, by GS Marítima, of sole control over Tirgal – was received by the regulator on the 8th of July 2025.
GS Marítima is active, directly and through subsidiaries, in maritime cargo transport and the integrated logistics sector, which is part of the Sousa Group, a maritime-port group with activities in logistics, energy, and tourism sectors and headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.
Tirgal provides freight forwarding services, essentially by sea for containerised and conventional cargo, from the ports of Lisbon and Leixões to the autonomous regions of Madeira and the Azores and to West Africa (São Tomé and Príncipe, Cape Verde and Angola).
