The Secretary of State for Infrastructure today, highlighted the Government of the Republic’s commitment to the improvement of aviation in Portugal. Hugo Espírito Santo, who came to Madeira to deliver the new wind detection system at the Region’s Airports, admitted that the winds affected four percent of the passengers who, until September this year, visited Madeira.
The minister, speaking from the VIP area of the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport of Madeira, admitted that, after a year, the new equipment should provide enough data to actively assess the airport’s wind safety limits.
Concluding, Hugo Espírito Santo said he was completely committed to the aviation sector, in a sustained and sustainable way.
He addressed the issue of the new Lisbon airport, referring to tomorrow’s news, stating, “we need to improve in all airports in the country. We need more supply, more human resources,” he said.
However, the President of the Regional Government today challenged the planning of a future airport in Madeira. “It is not an unreasonable hypothesis. It’s not for now. It won’t be in my time.” he said.
And he spoke of the importance of two aspects of travel and air connections: digital and air. At this moment, he said, it is essential to understand the equipment delivered by NAV Portugal, which aims to overcome the anachronism that has been going on for many years. If we change 3 knots in the wind limits, we make 80 percent of the flights that are currently affected viable.
