A driver was detained yesterday by the Public Security Police (PSP) on Rua das Capuchinhas, Funchal, after a police chase that began in the Achada area.
The operation began when PSP agents in an unmarked vehicle identified a driver who was endangering the lives of pedestrians and other road users.
The situation worsened in the vicinity of a school, where the driver almost collided with other cars and children trying to use a zebra crossing.
As the safety of pedestrians and other drivers was at stake, a pursuit of the suspicious vehicle was initiated. The chase ended on Rua das Capuchinhas, where PSP patrol agents and the team from the unmarked vehicle arrested the driver.
According to information gathered by JM, the man was driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol level of more than 2.3 g/l. A criminal offence under Portuguese Road legislation.
The subject was taken to the PSP command, where the necessary procedures were carried out. According to the newspaper, the detained man is expected to be presented to the criminal investigation judge for the first judicial interrogation.
