International Museum Day at the Whale Museum

The Madeira Whale Museum (MBM) – Municipality of Machico will carry out a set of free activities, to commemorate International Museum Day, which is celebrated on the 18th of May.  This year the theme is dedicated to “Museums for Education and Research.”

On the 17th, at 5 pm, the participatory exhibition entitled “Looking at the Sea” will be inaugurated, whose works are the result of the photography contest launched by MBM.

The 18th will be celebrated with the offer of free admission to its visitors, between 10 am and 6 pm.

On the 28th of May, at 11 am, MBM celebrates its 34th anniversary with the inauguration of the exhibition resulting from the creative project BALEIARTE, which combines education with creativity and is held annually, and based on a new theme each year.

In the 2023-2024 school year, under the theme “MagiCetus”, the artistic intervention focused on 18 wooden cubes, inspired by the “Rubik’s cubes,” in which each of the cube’s faces represents possibilities to make the world “spin,” ensuring marine ecosystem sustainability.

Also as part of the celebrations of its anniversary, a concert by the Madeira Chamber Choir will take place in the emblematic cetacean room, on the 2nd of June, at 7:00 pm under the artistic direction of Maestro Zélia Gomes.

Finally, and in order to mark World Oceans Day, which is celebrated on the 8th of June, the MBM will promote an environmental education action HELP TURN THE TIDE, on the 7th of June, with the cleaning of the beaches of the parish of Caniçal – Ribeira do Natal Beach and Calhau Beach.
