The Funchal Ecological Park (PECOF) has a new “Biodiversity Trail.” It is a thematic space, with an area of 2300 m², offering visitors the opportunity to observe and get to know 50 species of island flora, revealed the Funchal City Council (CMF) Councillor for the Environment, Nádia Coelho.
“The area serves as a stage for various environmental education activities, such as themed games for children and guided tours for the general public.” Information panels have been installed along the route detailing local flora and fauna, as well as promoting awareness of the importance of nature conservation.
“This space invites visitors to a playful and educational walk in the Funchal Ecological Park, providing the opportunity to get to know and appreciate the municipality of Funchal’s flora and fauna.”
Parallel to this initiative, the Funchal City Council further marked International Bat Appreciation Day, to alert the public to the ecological importance of bats as a way of combating the myths and negative beliefs that are often associated with these species.
Over the last two years, the Ecological Park has developed a pioneering project in the archipelago of Madeira, to conserve the three species of bats (Madeira Pipistrelle, Madeira Lesser Noctule, and the Grey Long-eared Bat) existing through the installation of shelter boxes in different habitats. After two years, says Nádia Coelho, “five bat boxes showed signs of occupation, confirming the possibility of using this methodology in bat conservation.”
Please note that all three species are under threat, with estimates that there are less than 1,000 of each species.
