Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries Nuno Maciel has emphasised the importance of strengthening the connection between Madeira’s producers and consumers by supporting regional produce and encouraging healthier, more sustainable diets.
Speaking at the presentation of Funchal Food Week, the Regional Secretary said that choosing locally produced food contributes to food security, sustainability and quality, particularly in an island and outermost region such as Madeira.
He praised Funchal City Council’s work through its SEMEAR strategy, including initiatives that bring farmers closer to the community and improve food awareness, particularly among younger generations.
“It is important that this awareness continues to develop because municipalities and parish councils are in the best position to reach their communities,” he said.
Nuno Maciel congratulated the council on holding another Food Week and confirmed that the Regional Secretariat’s services were available to strengthen cooperation between those who produce, process, sell and consume Madeira’s food.
