A lemon with a particularly unusual appearance has been harvested from the garden of José Pereira dos Reis in the Levada do Cavalo area and is now expected to undergo laboratory analysis at GESBA.
The fruit immediately attracted attention because of its size and, above all, its extraordinary shape. It has a large, rounded upper section from which a long, narrow growth extends, while otherwise retaining the familiar colour and textured skin of a lemon.
Rather than relying on imaginative guesses, of which there will undoubtedly be many, the decision was made to submit the curious citrus fruit for expert examination. Specialists at the GESBA laboratory may be able to determine what caused it to develop in such an unusual way.
Its appearance alone is not enough to establish the cause. Deformities in citrus fruits can result from several factors during development, including physiological abnormalities, environmental conditions, pests, or other interference while the fruit is forming.
For now, the remarkable lemon is certainly proving that fruit does not need to be perfectly shaped to become the centre of attention. GESBA’s analysis may finally solve the mystery of how it acquired its unusual form.
