IHM – Investimentos Habitacionais da Madeira began demolishing an illegal and vacant structure on Tuesday. The building is located on land adjoining the Nogueira neighbourhood in Camacha.
According to IHM, the site had been occupied without permission and was reportedly being used as a gathering place by people consuming drugs, raising concerns about residents’ safety.
The housing authority said the presence of combustible materials made the intervention more urgent, as a fire could have endangered people and nearby property.
The demolition forms part of measures to improve conditions in the Nogueira neighbourhood and safeguard those living in the area.
Residents had previously expressed concern about the unauthorised occupation of the building and the activities taking place there.
