The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) will increase its presence and surveillance at Madeira’s main mountain viewpoints ahead of the partial solar eclipse on Wednesday, the 12th of August.
Pico do Arieiro and Achada do Teixeira are among the locations expected to attract the largest crowds, as both offer wide horizons from which to observe the event.
At Pico do Arieiro, the eclipse is expected to begin at approximately 18:49 and reach its maximum at 19.46, when around 81.6% of the Sun will be covered by the Moon. The phenomenon is due to end at approximately 20.39.
With increased numbers expected in the mountains, the IFCN has urged visitors to travel responsibly and observe all safety rules in natural and protected areas.
People should remain in authorised areas and follow designated routes, avoiding dangerous behaviour near cliffs and steep drops. All instructions issued by the authorities should also be followed.
A significant increase in traffic is expected on roads leading into the mountains. Drivers are being asked to proceed with caution, obey road signs and park only in authorised spaces. Vehicles must not be stopped or parked where they could obstruct traffic or prevent access by emergency services.
The IFCN has also reminded visitors to protect the natural environment by taking all rubbish away with them and disposing of it properly.
The use of fire in forested and natural areas is prohibited, and any activity that could increase the risk of a wildfire must be avoided.
