New Taxi Regulations

The CHEGA parliamentary group has requested a hearing with the Mobility and Transport Authority (AMT) at the Assembly of the Republic’s Committee on Infrastructure, Housing, and Mobility to provide clarification regarding new tariff rules applicable to the taxi sector.

Francisco Gomes, the Madeiran deputy who serves as CHEGA’s coordinator for the committee, argues that the proposed amendments raise legitimate concerns regarding their potential impact on the thousands of professionals and small businesses that depend on the trade.

“We will not accept decisions taken from behind a desk, without properly assessing the consequences on the ground, that jeopardise the survival of a sector which provides an essential service to all Portuguese people, but which has been treated very poorly.” Francisco Gomes, Deputy in the Assembly of the Republic

According to CHEGA, it is vital to clarify the technical, economic, and regulatory criteria underpinning these proposed amendments. Furthermore, the party intends to assess the subsequent effects on the trade’s profitability and the long-term sustainability of operators.

Francisco Gomes maintains that any regulatory change within the sector must ensure a balance between consumer protection and the economic viability of professionals.

“The taxi sector has faced years of difficulty, unfair competition, and rising costs. The last thing it needs now are ill-conceived measures that further aggravate these existing problems.”

The deputy believes the hearing will allow for essential clarity regarding the rationale behind the new tariffs and their expected impact on both operators and users.

He concluded: “CHEGA will continue to defend taxi professionals and demand that all decisions are made with transparency, responsibility, and respect for those who work every day to guarantee mobility for the Portuguese people.”
