The new Cancela road junction is entering the final stages of construction, with the project expected to be fully completed in October, according to a statement from the Regional Government.
The remaining work includes road markings, landscaping and the reinstatement of areas affected during construction.
The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, will visit the site tomorrow at 11:00.
The redesigned Cancela interchange is intended to improve traffic flow and the distribution of vehicles converging on the area, particularly during peak periods.
Work began in October 2023 but was completely suspended between January and March 2025. The suspension remained partially in place until September 2025 for work involving the widening of the Quinta Bridge deck.
The €2.38 million contract was awarded to AFAVIAS – Engenharia e Construções, S.A. Including VAT, the total cost is approximately €2.9 million.
To the north of the VR1, the former junction has been replaced by an elongated, asymmetrical roundabout with two traffic lanes and five exits. It accommodates traffic travelling between Estrada do Garajau, the ER204 and Camacha, as well as vehicles heading towards Garajau, entering or leaving the VR1, or accessing nearby commercial areas.
South of the VR1, the former junction has been converted into a two-lane roundabout known as Rotunda Sul. Its four exits connect with the westbound VR1 exit, the eastbound VR1 entrance, and Estrada do Garajau in the directions of both Garajau and Camacha.
The main restructuring of the two junctions was completed in September 2025 and included earthworks, drainage, retaining structures, paving, road signs and lighting.
