The deputy of Chega, Francisco Gomes, says that the approval of the new nationality law is “a clear sign that the party was right” in the warnings it has been making about the lack of control of immigration in Portugal.
The parliamentarian considers that the legislative change also results from the “political influence that Chega has been exerting in these matters, forcing the government of the Republic to retreat and introduce changes that it previously refused. This law proves that the party was right from the beginning. It was only possible because the PSD gave in on essential matters and realised that, without Chega, it would have no stability, no support, no chance of approving a new legal framework.”
The deputy points out that “the legislation now approved is far from perfect and falls short of what Chega defends for the country.” It is not the law we wanted, nor is it as harsh as it should be, but it represents an important advance on a path that must continue to be made more firmly. When we are in government, we will return to this issue, with renewed vigilance.”
Among the changes introduced, the parliamentarian highlights the possibility of withdrawing nationality from individuals who commit serious crimes, such as homicide, rape, drug trafficking, criminal association, or who have obtained nationality fraudulently.
Francisco Gomes guarantees that Chega “will continue to fight for more demanding policies in the control of immigration, warning of what it considers to be risks associated with certain migratory flows. Portugal needs tougher, clearer, and more demanding laws. We cannot continue to open doors without control, especially to cultures that are incompatible with our principles and values.”
