Popular Youth Concerned Over Funeral Expenses

The Popular Youth of Madeira expressed concern over reports that public support for funeral expenses for children and young people is often limited due to the lack of a contributory record, effectively reducing assistance to the funeral allowance, which is insufficient to cover the actual costs involved.

“We understand that this issue cannot be analysed only from a financial perspective. It is about ensuring a humanistic public, proportional and compatible response that dignifies human life, especially when vulnerable minors and young people are concerned.”

Furthermore, it’s unreasonable to treat children, young people, minors, or students as “non-contributors” on the same level as an adult who, despite having age and ability, has never contributed. For minors and young people, there’s a clear and valid reason for not having contributions, so the law should acknowledge this difference through positive discrimination, similar to other social protection measures that take into account being a minor and economically dependent.

The Popular Youth of Madeira defends a review of the applicable legal framework, to ensure that, in the event of the death of minors, there is an adequate and effective response, without automatic penalty for the lack of discounts, guaranteeing support and with a clear, predictable and de-bureaucratised.”

In this sense, the party has already contacted Sara Madalena, Member of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira, so that, under the terms of ALRAM’s regulations, their proposal may be discussed in coherence with a matrix based on the values of Christian Democracy and Humanism.”

“The protection of the most vulnerable must be a structuring criterion of public action: no one is left behind,” concludes the group’s press statement.
