Huge waves affected two areas of the parish of Paul do Mar today.
According to the Parish Council, the swell caused several damages to a vehicle and a recreational vessel in the port of Quebrada.
At the Lagos site, waves broke over the walls and flooded nearby homes. Responding to this, the Parish Council of Paul do Mar appeals to the entire population to pay extra attention, avoid risk areas, and follow all safety recommendations.
Many residents of Bairro dos Pescadores, in Paul do Mar, secured doorways with wooden planks, determined to defend their property against the next high tide. Luckily, most people had already placed flood defences outside their homes, and damage was minimal. Even so, many were fearful of further flooding, even though the President of the Parish Council, Paulo Rodrigues, said that the worst was over. However, resident misery was overtaken by those who wanted to take photos of the spectacular seascape.
In a statement, Doroteia Leça, Mayor of Caheta, who visited and spoke to residents, said that she was thankful that there had been no loss of human life. “The Municipality of Calheta, in conjunction with the other competent entities, will remain in a state of alert in the coming hours, given that high tide is expected to reach its peak around 22:00, although it is estimated that the swell will not reach the intensity previously experienced.”
The municipality appeals to the population and visitors to the island to adopt the necessary precautions, avoiding risky behaviour and complying with the recommendations of the competent authorities.
