Rainfall Above Red Warning Levels

Heavy rainfall led the IPMA to upgrade the orange weather warning to red over much of the island of Madeira this morning.

The heaviest rainfall was recorded between 08:00 and 08:10, where 11.7 litres per square metre of rain fell in just 10 minutes.  At that time, a red warning was already in effect due to heavy rainfall.

In just six hours, between 02:30 and 08:30, the high mountainous regions of the island accumulated 170.4 mm, more than double the red warning threshold (60 mm/6h). Over the last 24 hours, the total amount has reached 215.0 mm.

In addition to Pico do Areeiro, other places also exceeded the maximum IPMA criteria. In Chão do Areeiro, 147.9 mm of rain fell in six hours, while in São Vicente the precipitation levels reached 82.1 mm/6h.

Other areas fell into yellow warning levels including; Santo da Serra (39.7 mm/6h and 12.6 mm/1h), Porto Moniz (39.2 mm/6h and 10.9 mm/1h) and Ponta do Sol/Lugar de Baixo, with 14.5 mm in one hour, confirming an episode of intense rainfall over the entire island, although with greater severity in the mountainous areas and northern slopes.
