Avian Flu Brings Experts Together

The detection of a case of avian influenza in Madeira prompted a meeting between the Ornithological Association of Madeira (AOM) and the Ornithological Breeders Club of Madeira (CCOM) with the Regional Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Welfare (DRV).

According to a statement from the AOM, this meeting aimed to enhance biosecurity measures, ensuring the safe continuation of regional ornithological activities.

Preventing, planning, and improving procedures with clubs, breeders, and public entities, ensuring that all biosecurity measures are complied with and properly communicated to members, were the objectives.

The same source adds that several points were discussed, namely the update of prevention and hygiene protocols; the definition of uniform procedures to be applied in recreational exhibitions and official championships, and the importance of permanent coordination between AOM, CCOM, and DRV.

The uninterrupted continuation of bird-related activities is ensured, as the birds involved in these events are not among the species vulnerable to the avian influenza virus, according to the technical assessment by the Regional Directorate of Veterinary and Animal Welfare.

The Ornithological Association of Madeira confirms that it will promote awareness and update actions aimed at its members to reinforce good practices of prevention, hygiene, and health surveillance.

The respective president, JoĂŁo Fernandes, quoted in the statement, reaffirms that all planned activities, including the official championships in November and December, will take place normally, with full respect for the recommendations of the competent authorities.
