Calls for an end to the massacre of civilians in the Gaza Strip by Israel, and the liberation of Palestine were heard in Funchal this afternoon.
Next to the statue of the navigator João Gonçalves Zarco, Palestinian flags and posters mark the purpose of this peaceful initiative, closely followed by a group of police. The vigil was promoted by a group of citizens, who claim to be non-partisan and criticised the inaction of the rulers, calling on Portugal and the European Union to take a stand.
After an introduction by one of the members of the Marulho Collective, the microphone was made available for people to share ideas and feelings about the war. A war in which more than 50,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip. Emotional speeches, for peace, freedom, and humanity were heard in the form of prose and poetry.
While the vigil was taking place, a man walked by carrying an Israeli flag.
While possibly waving the flag, the individual was approached peacefully by one of the demonstrators. A brief moment of tension ensued before PSP agents intercepted the couple.
