The National Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation, IP-RAM (IFCN, IP-RAM), has announced the partial reopening of two pedestrian routes in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, after the completion of technical safety assessments.
IFCN Walking Route, PR 2 Vereda do Urzal is now passable from Lombo do Urzal to kilometer 6.2.
PR 17 Caminho do Pináculo and Folhadal is open between Encumeada and Bica da Cana. Despite the partial reopening, the IFCN warns that the closed sections pose a significant risk of injury or harm to human life.
IFCN president Manuel Filipe asks all walkers to act responsibly and not jump over barriers. It is not just an act of recklessness: it is an attack on one’s safety and that of those having to save you. The no-go zones are marked on the basis of strict technical criteria. Ignoring the signage can have consequences, and those who disobey signs can be fined. Only recently, four walkers were fined €250.00 each for jumping over a barrier and walking along a closed section.
Finally, the IFCN confirms that pedestrian walks are monitored, and any changes in safety conditions will be promptly communicated to the general public.
