The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) reported today that electricity production in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, estimated from the electricity emission data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), increased by 2.8% year-on-year in the 1st quarter of 2025.
Analysing the production mix of the electricity emitted in the reference period – whose total was around 235.2 Gigawatt hours (Gwh) – it is observed that, compared to the period from January to March 2024 There was a greater preponderance of hydro sources (+64.5%) and municipal solid waste (+14.9%) in energy production, to the detriment of wind (-20.7%), thermal (-3.0%) and photovoltaic (-0.1%)sources.
Consequently, the share of the total energy emitted using thermal source changed from 55.2% in the 1st quarter of 2024 to 52.2% in the same quarter quarter of 2025, which means that the share of renewables, in the latter period, reached 47.8% (44.8% in the same quarter of the previous year).
It should be noted that, since the beginning of the available series (1st quarter of 2009), this is the highest percentage of renewable sources in electricity emission, surpassing the previous maximum, which was for the 1st quarter of 2022 (45.3%).”DREM.
