Electricity production increased by 2.1%, estimated from electricity emission data provided by the Madeira Electricity Company (EEM), during the 1st half of 2024, compared to the same period of the previous year.
“Analysing the production mix of electricity emitted in the 1st half of 2024 – whose total was around 456.5 Gigawatt hours (Gwh) – it can be seen that, compared to the period from January to June 2023, there was a lower preponderance of thermal (-3.9%) and hydro (-6.1%) sources in energy production, to the detriment of wind (+33.5%), urban solid waste (+6.5%) and photovoltaic (+4.2%) sources. Consequently, the share of total energy emitted using thermal sources rose from 66.2% in the 1st half of 2023 to 62.3% in the reference period, which means that the share of renewables increased, standing at 37.7% (33.8% in the first six months of 2023), writes the Regional Directorate of Statistics.
There was “a greater preponderance of natural gas as a source for the production of electricity, concentrating 16.5% of the total, (9.4% in the same period in 2023), with an increase of 80.3% compared to the same period last year, in the production of electricity from this source”.
Reducing the scope of analysis to the 2nd quarter of 2024, it can be seen that electricity emission was 227.6 Gwh, an increase of 1.4% year-on-year.
