Dog Rescue In Santa Luzia River

Last updated on 14th March 2024

The Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters carried out a large-scale animal rescue mission along the Ribeira de Santa Luzia.

A team of mountain rescue officers from the Madeiran Volunteer Firefighters were alerted to the plight of several dogs that had been abandoned in the river.

There was general dismay as firefighters retrieved the body of a dog that had been thrown into the river some time ago.  However, three dogs were rescued, and at the time the article was written officers were looking for a fourth dog.

Many of those present watching the rescue mission expressed their fury at how animals continue to be treated.

UPDATE: The fourth dog was finally caught after putting up a fight.   The dogs have all been sent to the Municipal Kennel for treatment, and housing as it is uncertain whether any of the four have been microchipped.
