New Year’s Eve: Rain Expected

New Year’s Eve is expected to be marked by periods of rain, the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) said today, stressing that the probability is in the order of 70 to 90%.

“The weather for the archipelago of Madeira between the 30th of December, and the 2nd of January will be conditioned by the approach and passage of frontal undulations of low activity, associated with low-dug depressions, centered approximately around Madeira.

Thus, precipitation is expected to occur during this period.  Rain will be generally light throughout the archipelago until mid-afternoon on Sunday. More frequent showers are expected on the northern slopes and highlands.

On a cheery note, the IPMA suggests that the weather forecast could jeopardise the traditional fireworks show that marks New Year’s Eve in Funchal, one of the biggest tourist attractions in Madeira, at a time when hotel occupancy in the region is around 100% and the floating population will be around 90 thousand people, including the passengers and crew of eight cruise ships scheduled to arrive on Sunday.

Rain is then expected to decrease to 50 to 70% in the early hours of January the 1st.  Rain mass will stabilise on Monday and increase again on Tuesday.

Make sure you take a brolly with you.
