Pedro Calado Sworn in as Mayor of Funchal

The new Mayor of Funchal, Pedro Calado, was officially sworn in at 17:30 this evening.

Proving his popularity he was given a standing ovation as he took office.  However, the new Mayor has has already been quoted as a man who will not be used for the political whim of others, and firmly believes in getting down to business, and achieving what he and his team have set out to achieve.

As part of his opening address, he listed his and his teams priorities over the next four years, saying:-

“We assume as priorities the strengthening of social support, housing, investment, support for local commerce, job creation, low taxation, encouraging entrepreneurship, attracting new residents, mobility, planning and planning of the traffic, safety, health and education programmes, support for sport, culture and youth, economics of longevity, the environment, green spaces and cleanliness, urban planning and licensing, drinking water and basic sanitation networks, animal welfare and public transport.”

His predecessor, Miguel Silva Gouveia, has already taken office as councilor.
