Hypoglycemic Tourist Rescued

This afternoon the Madeira Volunteer Firefighters were called out to Pico do Gato to assist a hypoglycemic tourist.  The tourist, a diabetic man, was hiking between Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo when he began to feel ill, due to a drop in blood sugar.

Guards from the Vigilantes da Natureza, located the man, and provided him with initial first aid support, having sent their location to the Sapadores do Funchal and Madeirenses firefighters teams, who, in the meantime, were activated to provide the necessary care.

With the support of the teams involved, the tourist ended up being able to walk back, where he was taken to hospital.

It is important to remember that guards from the Vigilantes da Natureza, under the new statute are Civil Protection Agents and are adept at dealing with these situations.
